How Many “Tweets” Did China’s Twitter Generate in the First One Minute of 2013?

Happy new year–or as they say in China, xinnian kuaile. According to Sina Weibo, China’s pre-eminent micro-blogging platform, users generated a total of 729,571 posts in the very first minute of 2013. To put the figure in context, at that blistering pace–which, of course, was not sustained–the platform would have generated over 1 billion tweets in a single day.

Sina Weibo has somewhere around 36.5 million daily active users. Given that 60% of Sina Weibo users engage the platform via smart phone, it’s not surprising that the very first Weibo post of 2013 came via a Nokia C7.
