The Miserable Fates of China’s Former Top Athletes

China’s sports system is under serious fire from its own citizens. On Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter, Li Chengpeng (@李承鹏) recently wrote a scathing blog entry on China’s sports system. He called China’s Olympics team a “dancing troupe,” and continued, “[sports officials] over-emphasize quantity but not quality, beauty and influence. They would be happiest if gold medal are sold by the tons and happiness can be weighed on a scale.”

Li also mentioned the Olympic athletes who had fallen into the bottom rung of the society after retirement–“the nobodies that gave everything and received nothing in return.” Their current fate is documented in these troubling photos, which recently made the rounds online. Tea Leaf Nation translates.
