Image – Who is Hu? The Many Faces of Hu Jintao

Hu Jintao, we hardly knew ye. Can we ever divine what truly lay behind the stoic facade?

As China’s paramount leader holding down the holy trinity of titles — President of the People’s Republic of China, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission — Hu prepares to start handing his power over to Xi Jinping come this fall. Perhaps it is time to reflect on a leader that was something of an enigma when he ascended to power, and remains so ten years later.

If nothing else, Hu presented a consistent outward image, even when there was tremendous intrigue behind the scenes. In honor of Hu’s unsurpassed self-control, Tea Leaf Nation presents this parting gift: The Many Faces of Hu Jintao.

There is one other photo of Hu that might be referenced, though it is not a head shot: The Zhwing Hu taken during the 50th anniversary of Liberation parade (2009) when the all-female Pink Flamingos goose-stepped passed Hu in review. He actually did smile. Lustily.
